Fall is quietly one of the best times to be at Weslake Resort. The boats thin out, the fishing picks up, and Otter Tail County puts on one of the best color shows in Minnesota. Here's what to know if you're planning a fall trip — or just curious what's happening around the lake this season.

When to Catch Peak Color

Otter Tail County typically hits peak fall color from mid-September through early October. Once it turns, you don't have to go far to see it.

The Otter Trail Scenic Byway is one of the best drives in the state for it — rolling hills, farmland, and lake after lake in full color. From the resort, it's an easy afternoon out to:

  • Maplewood State Park — hilltop views over Lake Lida, plus a five-mile scenic drive through woods and restored prairie

  • Glendalough State Park — a quieter, less-crowded option near Battle Lake

  • Phelps Mill — a historic gristmill built in 1889 on the Otter Tail River, and one of the most photographed spots in the area

Pack a thermos, bring the camera, and give yourself a full afternoon — the drive between Fergus Falls and Perham alone is worth the trip.


Fall Fishing on West Lost Lake

Fishing doesn't slow down in fall — it turns on. As overnight temps drop, fish feed heavier ahead of winter, and it's widely considered one of the most productive stretches of the year on West Lost Lake.

Good news if you're planning around it: there are no closures to worry about. Walleye, Pike, and Bluegill stay open right through February 2027, so a fall booking means you can fish the whole stay without checking a season calendar.

Boat rentals stay fully stocked into fall, and the fish cleaning house is ready whenever you haul one in.


What's in Season This Fall (Hunting)

If you're combining a lake trip with a hunt, here's what opens over the next couple months:

  • Archery deer & ruffed grouse — open September 19

  • Duck season — opens September 26 (early teal September 5–9, youth waterfowl weekend September 12–13)

  • Fall turkey — October 3 through November 1

  • Pheasant — opens October 10
